Sweet woodruff
has only a faint summery smell of its own, but it will
help keep stronger,
musty odors out of closets, trunks, and long closed
blanket chests.
My own favorite sachet is a simple one suitable for
clothing or
linens, subtle and old fashioned. It consists of equal
parts of lavender,
old rose petals, woodruff, and whole cloves. One
sachet will
keep a bureau drawer lightly scented and fresh, even in
summer's dampness.
For people with
second homes that are closed for the winter, musty odors
in closets and
bureaus are a particular problem. A bag of woodruff
alone or in
a mixture with lavender or cloves will prevent this.
Lavender bags
have been used to freshen stored linens for centuries, and
the scent of
lavender is, to many people, synonymous with clean sheets
and towels.
