NATURAL HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS
From: The Old Farmer's Almanac: Hearth and Home Companion for 1993

Some of the simplest substances do the best cleaning jobs around the
house. Before you reach for those neon-bright supermarket products made
          from things you can't pronounce, give these time-tested solutions a try;

          BATHTUBS AND SINKS

Rub with half a lemon dipped in borax to regain the sparkle. Or wipe
with white vinegar, then baking soda, and rinse clean with water.

          CARPETS

To bring out the color in rugs and carpets, brush them with a mixture of
1 cup white vinegar and 1 gallon of water. Animal urine odors can
usually be vanquished by using a half-and-half mixture of white vinegar
and water. Sponge it into the carpet and then blot it up with thick
          towels.

          DRAINS

To unclog, pour 3 cups of boiling vinegar down the drain. Or pour in
1/2 cup baking soda, then 1/2 cup vinegar. Let these bubble away for
about 20 minutes. Then turn on the hot water and let it run for 3 or 4
minutes, or pour down a dettleful of boiling water.

          FAUCETS

Rub with lemon peel, wash, and dry with a soft cloth to shine and remove
spots. To remove hard white calcium deposits, soak toilet tissue with
white vinegar and wrap it around the stain. Leave tissue in place for
two hours. Then wipe with a soft cloth.

          FURNITURE

In a small glass jar, combine 1 tnsp white vinegar, 1 tbsp boiled
linseed oil, 1 tbsp turpentine. (Make just enough for one day's work,
since the mixture gets gummy) Dampen a cloth with cold water and wring
out until it's as dry as you can get it. Saturate cloth with mixute and
apply very sparingly to a small area at a time. Let dry about a half
hour, then polish with a soft cloth.

          GLASSES

To remove cloudy mineral deposits from drinking glasses, put 1 tbsp of
lemon juice in each glass and fill with hot water. Let sit for several
          hours, then wash.

          OVEN

Dampen a cleaning tag in vinegar and water and wipe out the interior
once or twice a week to prevent grease buildup. To clean a dirty oven,
set a pan on ammonia in it overnight. In the morning, scrub the oven
with baking soda and steel wool. Add a bit of lemon juice to the final
          rinse.
